For those who have been following my Twitter stream, you have probably noticed several cryptic tweets about ham.

It began with my friend Fotia’s Facebook status update last night:

“When your dancing falls short, become a big ham sandwich.”

Truer words have never been spoken. Except for, perhaps, Shira’s adage, “It’s a party, not an art-y!”

The finest dancers bring the mustard, lettuce and rye to the party – whether or not their dancing falls short, per se. This is not a dance for people who take themselves seriously, though there are plenty of dancers who’d think of themselves as, say, imported Brie and Anjou pear on a croissant. Most of our American, general public audiences don’t remember the Turkish drops or the way we emoted to Enta Omri. They do, however, remember the important things: like the masterful way in which we humiliated their boss during an office bellygram!

The longer I’ve been dancing professionally, the more I’ve allowed myself to ease up and have fun with my audiences. I believe there’s no aspiration more noble than to create beauty while kicking off the party of somebody’s dreams. After all, it is possible to slip a little bit of culture into that “ham” sandwich!

OK, enough with the deep thoughts. But consider this your reminder to do what you love and love what you do!

Now, if you excuse me, it’s time for a midnight snack. All this talk about sandwiches has been making me hungry!
